Mohamoud Frites makes a serious controvercy about media in Morocco

By Allal El Alaoui

We,cinemagoers in Morooco find the idea of publishing a new magazine called MarocArts, that deals with artists and cinema in Morocco in general,a very fascinating gesture from Frites.

MarocArts has a beautiful goal for cinephiles and Moroccans who feel thrown away or rejected ,states Sifeddine Dounia, the publisher of the magazine. The main topics of this magazine are meant to stand by those who don 't have yet the chance to work in cinema, Theatre , or else .Apparently, there are too many people who intrude this field of mysterious Arts or become quickly artists (see the magical tool : copy and paste ) because they are lucky to have a telephone call from HACA,PDG,or a well known familly cast like a Fassy,or a Rbaty... ( see the hiarchy of politics in Morooco )

Mohamoud frites keeps to impress the national media in Morooco which is really busy to give only full support to foreigners and write about their intimacy of life ,unfortunately the press forgets to highlight lives of our native ones.

From this context, i, Allal El Alaoui, am in total agreement with what Mohamoud Frites is doing especially we still see our Media , gouverned by either a secret lobby, ignorant responsables or unmerciful authority which keeps to lurk in the affair of true artists and film-makers.Therefore, i have written to Frites an email saying to him ;because there are too many international lectures of my blog ( Allal-cinemagoers) i would like to just translate his 16 Frites questions concerning Media here in Morooco , hopefully to find any serious listeners which is a matter of
pure consciousness , otherwise thanks to Bill Gates, the prophet of information ( the Internet ) to communicate this article around the world.

Reading out these Frites questions memorises me of those pure bureacracts who would hate you so much because they don't want you to work for this country;may be it is out of their malicious jealousy or nasty machiavilism. I really find these questions truthful ,because there are too many persona-non grata,( Hot headed artists as the media responsibles would call them ) in their genre of Arts who would tell you how badly are being marginalized and abondoned by either CCM lecture commissions ,or sado-mazochistic mentalities in SNRT which carries on rejecting to produce good works and from also 2M Soriad stubborn and cold indifference mastermind towards true Artists.

Questions That Mohamoud Frites is still asking to The Moroccan media :

1 -Why does not Morocco have various and free TV channels ?
2-Why don't we have celebrities and stars in Morocco ?
3-Why are not our cinematic productions being seen abroad ?
4-Why are CDs and DVDs hacked in Morocco ?
5-Why are home-theatres still close in Morocco?
6-Why are national and international productions still being hacked in Morocco before being seen ?
7-Why do we fund ( give money ) to bad movies and ignore the good ones ?
8-Why does CCM( Moroccan National Cinema ) give full support to bad directors ?
9-Why do losers speahead or lead media in Morocco ?
10- Why can't we find film schools that teach direction of photography, sound-design and Film - direction ?
11- Why has Morocco become a studio to foreigners that allow hetefully to make muslim and Arab dignity in a badly state , and in stead we continue to neglect Moroccan film -directors and technicians ?
12- Why don't we have an artistic tribunal to listen to those who suffer from indifference and marginalization in regard to their scripts ?
13-Why do we give access to juries who don't understand drama and artistic works ?
14-Why don't we have a public-award in cinema ?
15-Why do we praise foreign artists and hate ours ?
16-Why can't we see Moroccan stars in local TV channels ?

Mira Nair,an Indian vision from New York

‘ I haven't ever been in exile because I have chosen to cross many oceans, but only in a voluntary manner. It is very different for friends of mine - artists, poets and writers I love - who have had exile imposed on them. I feel very much that cinema is born as a medium to capture exile. The idea of going out of your hotel in Mississippi and looking out of your window and seeing your garden in Kampala. This something that cinema lends itself to brilliantly, almost as much as literature’

Jack G. Shaheen makes a soft Intifada against Hollywood

Jack G. Shaheen

By Jack Shaheen

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People is a groundbreaking book that dissects a slanderous history dating from cinema's earliest days to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters that feature machine-gun wielding and bomb-blowing "evil" Arabs.

Award-winning film authority Jack G. Shaheen, noting that only Native Americans have been more relentlessly smeared on the silver screen, painstakingly makes his case that "Arab" has remained Hollywood's shameless shorthand for "bad guy," long after the movie industry has shifted its portrayal of other minority groups. In this comprehensive study of nearly one thousand films, arranged alphabetically in such chapters as "Villains," "Sheikhs," "Cameos," and "Cliffhangers," Shaheen documents the tendency to portray Muslim Arabs as Public Enemy #1-brutal, heartless, uncivilized Others bent on terrorizing civilized Westerners.

Shaheen examines how and why such a stereotype has grown and spread in the film industry and what may be done to change Hollywood's defamation of Arabs.

Rabie El Jawhari,a new birth of a talented film-maker in Morocco

Rabie El Jawhari and Allal El Alaoui

Rabie El Jawhari

By Allal El Alaoui

Any actor or actress and even technician would tell you about Rabie"s great love and devotion to movies .He is called Rabie El Jawhari, a brilliant first assistant -director and now becomes a confirmed film-director who has just finished his first film documentary on humain rights in Morocoo. This film documentary is supposed to be premiered at Bahnini theatre in Rabat on the 27-12-2007 .I suppose that Humain Watch , IFEX and local Humain right associations would come to see Rabie's first project that deal with the unconditioned ways of life that Moroccan prisoners used to live in Tendouf in Moroccan Sahara. It is a really a must see film documentary especially for cinemagoers and Morocccans in general, because we do not have habits to see images of the torture of our prisoners from local Tv and now Rabie has given us this fantastic gift to know this horror and thriller conditions .

The Idea of filming sufferances and pains of Moroccans who really undergo severe punishments from Algerian secret services and also from agents of the so called Polisario, comes from his student mate who used to tell him terrifying stories of hi s father captured by Polisario in Sahara tents when they were still students at Mohammed The fivth University in Rabat .

As a sensitive film-maker , Rabie was deeply touched by these stories of pure hatred and sado-mazochisism. Therefore,Rabie makes further researches about tortures by contacting a writer called Abdellh lamani .This latter has given him rights to adapt some stories from his book -The Horror - and of course those images would chill and shake you to the highest degree of disgust.

Rabie has worked with so many national and international film-directors as a first assistant -director naming for example Mohammed Asli and Maurizio Zaccaro .He speaks four languages ,Arabic,French, English and Italian and has a marvellous cinematic and technical background that eventually help him to make beautiful images in his film documentary.El Jawhari resumes and rewrites academical works on cinema and co-writes by Abdellah Zerwali ( see below ). Rabie also gives technical and artistic training courses on film-making namely the branch assitant -directors.In fact ,when Rabie is on the stage, he directs his actors with intensive care, a good know -how and a magnificent experience that he has had with his colleagues.

Censorship in Bollywood and Morocco

By Allal El Alaoui

Censorship is a world wild law instrument that all cinema filmmakers and producers undergo. Every country in the world has its own rules about censorship . What Morocco and India have in common about supervising movies is freedom of speech. Both countries are still having controversial debates about whether thinkers ,journalists and filmmakers can go farther to tackle touchy subjects . ‘ Maroc’ by Leila Marrakchi is severly banned by an Islamic political party,JDP (1) in Morocco.Yet, some cinema theatres have projected it . The same as ‘ Fanaa’ by Mahesh Bhatt, and the "Da Vinci Code," which endured a delayed opening in India, and has now been banned in various states across the country due to the fear of violent protests by the minority Christian community. Recent clip of Paris Hilton (2) was also banned from all TV channels in India . This is despite the fact that it has been cleared by the independent Central Censors Board without any recommended cuts.
Rakesh Sharma’s The Final Solution (2004) is easily the most capacious of the handful of documentaries on the Gujarat killings. Despite of its projetion around the world , this film treating the clash between Muslims and Hindus in Gujurat, still awaits a certificate from CBFC(3).
Bollywood is the world most prolific industry that goes through censorship. In India ,they call it CBFC,Central Board of Film Certification. Having its head quaters in Mumbay,it has nine regional centers at Bangalore,Chennai ,Cuttack,Delhi ,Guwahati,Hyderabad,Kolkata,Mumbay, and thiruvananthapuram.
All kind of film support either it is celluloid or video or CD or DVD version are subjected to censorship. This makes Supreme Court of India publish an official statement through out India that all films meant for public exhibition, irrespective of their length must be screened. In fact, the board screens every movie and can order to cut out offensive scenes. Producers can make an appeal to gain rights at the court , but CBFC ‘ responsabiltity is only to certify films. Members of the censorship board who come from the world of education , politics , arts , social sciences and films are appointed only for three years,. Touchy political subjects like religious or ethnic themes are off limits.

"Film censorship becomes necessary because a film motivates thought and action and assures a high degree of attention and retention as compared to the printed word. The combination of act and speech, sight and sound in semi darkness of the theatre with elimination of all distracting ideas will have a strong impact on the minds of the viewers and can affect emotions. Therefore, it has as much potential for evil as it has for good and has an equal potential to instill or cultivate violent or good behaviour. It cannot be equated with other modes of communication. Censorship by prior restraint is, therefore, not only desirable but also necessary"
one of the objective of the certification is that the medium of film
must consider the values and standards of society; presents clean and healthy entertainment; and the film is of aesthetic value and cinematically of a good standard » (3).

Thomas Vinterberg,a witty style of Cinema

Thomas Vinterberg

Some very black humour (including pathetic scenes of the decadent bourgeoisie at play), none of it gratuitous, some of it damning, some just outrageously funny. But this is not a light film in any sense. Guess what really happens when the victimised family member tells the truth? Ouch! What about when mommy gets to choose between husband and child? Double ouch!! And finally, when victim asks dad why he did it -- well, prepare for the blow to the old solar plexus...

Trust me, I know. This is how it really happens. It's good to see a well-crafted film (that gives its human themes paramount importance) on this subject. I'm tired of watching films which try to make me feel sorry for rich kids whose parents just don't understand how hard it is to be a rich kid with pimples.

As the families (one in ten?) with histories like this one can attest, being "dysfunctional" would have been a very happy place to be, compared to the reality as shown in this fine film.

First of all, the home video camera style, casting and editing perfectly suited the subject matter and script. Wealthy and overbearing patriarch is feted on the occasion of his 60th birthday -- extended family and hangers-on gather with some of the best and worst aspects of our culture on display. It's also a rather sad occasion, as one of daddy's daughters killed herself not long ago, but several guests mention how "nice" the funeral was, and which room is mine? Eldest son rises to give a toast to the old man -- and out comes some unpleasantness that people would either prefer to pretend they didn't hear, or stuff forcefully back down his throat. Then the fun really starts.
